You don't need to replace your pessary on a fixed schedule — you replace it when the device tells you it's time. Here are the 6 specific signs to watch for.
1. Surface roughness or texture change
Run your fingertip along the pessary surface. New silicone is smooth and slightly slippery. If it feels rough, chalky, or grainy anywhere, silicone breakdown has started. Replace within 30 days.
2. Discoloration beyond the base color
New SciMed silicone is off-white or (Pink version) flesh-tone. Yellowing, brown patches, or persistent discoloration that doesn't clean off = time to replace. Some minor color change from daily wear is normal; consistent staining is not.
3. Cracks, tears, or membrane damage
Inspect the ring under bright light. Any hairline cracks, notches on the rim, or (on the With Support model) tears in the support membrane = replace immediately. Damaged silicone can cause tissue irritation.
4. Sticky or tacky feel
New silicone feels smooth. Old silicone that has degraded feels sticky or tacky — the surface polymer is breaking down. This is a clear replacement signal, even if the ring looks visually fine.
5. Persistent odor that won't wash out
An occasional mild smell after weeks of wear is normal and washes out. If you clean it thoroughly and the odor returns quickly, the silicone has absorbed protein/bacteria into its surface pores — replacement time.
6. 12-18 months since first use
Even a visually-perfect pessary is recommended for replacement at 12-18 months. Micro-scale silicone breakdown happens whether you can see it or not. Older devices provide less consistent support.
