Abney Level — Hand-Held Surveying Clinometer, Arc + Grade % Scales, Portable Field Instrument
Couldn't load pickup availability
Compact hand-held Abney level for preliminary surveying, slope measurement, and reconnaissance-grade elevation work — a foundational field instrument used by surveyors, foresters, civil engineers, and trail crews for over a century. Sighting tube with bubble level + graduated arc measures vertical angle (degrees) AND slope grade (%) simultaneously. Portable pocket-sized — takes 30 seconds to sight, no batteries, works in any weather. Ideal for preliminary layout before hauling out a total station. $79 direct — versus $175-$350 for Suunto PM-5 / Sokkia / Brunton branded surveying clinometers.
How the Abney level works
Look through the sighting tube at your target point. Adjust the movable index arm until the reflected bubble aligns with the crosshair on your target. Read the vertical angle off the graduated arc (degrees) AND the equivalent slope grade (%) off the second scale. That's it — 30 seconds to measure any slope or elevation angle. Same principle as premium clinometers, at 1/4 the price.
Applications
- Preliminary surveying + reconnaissance — quick slope checks before deploying a total station or theodolite
- Forestry + timber cruising — tree height measurement (basic trigonometry from measured angle + horizontal distance)
- Civil engineering site recon — driveway slope check, cut/fill assessment, ADA-compliance walkway grades
- Trail construction + hiking trail design — sustainable trail grade verification (5-15% typical target)
- Landscape architecture — grading, drainage assessment, hardscape slope check
- Solar panel installation — roof pitch measurement for panel angle optimization
- Cable + tramway + zipline layout — cable slope calculation from anchor point to anchor point
- Mining + geology field work — outcrop dip angle, road cut angle measurement
- Roofing + construction — roof pitch verification, ramp slope for accessibility
- Surveying + civil engineering education — introductory surveying tool for students

Abney level vs digital inclinometer — which do you need?
Abney level (this instrument) = mechanical, batteryless, weather-immune, sighting-optics allow you to measure distant points (a target 100m away). Best for preliminary field surveying, forestry, remote-area work. Digital inclinometer / smart level = higher precision (0.1°), fast digital readout, but requires flat-surface contact (can't sight a distant point). Best for construction slope-checking on the actual surface. This Abney level is the field tool; a digital inclinometer is the shop/floor tool.

FAQ
How does this compare to Suunto PM-5 / Brunton?
Suunto + Brunton are premium precision-machined clinometers with tighter angle calibration + longer lifetime warranty. This SciMed Abney level delivers reliable surveying-grade preliminary measurement at ~1/4 the OEM price. For definitive property-boundary or engineering-grade work, invest in Suunto. For preliminary recon + forestry + trail work + teaching, SciMed is the value pick.
Can I use this for tree height measurement?
Yes — the classic forestry application. Stand at known horizontal distance from tree base, sight the top of the tree, read the angle. Tree height = horizontal distance × tan(angle). Free forestry field-workflow calculators cover this — Abney level is the essential measurement input.
Calibration?
Verify against a known-slope reference (spirit level on a shim at known angle) annually or after impact. Field-calibration adjustment via a small screw on the index arm — details in the included instruction card.
Rugged for field use?
Yes — brass/metal tube, no plastic to crack, no LCD to fail. Stow in shirt pocket or belt pouch. Wipe clean after wet fieldwork.
