The Bostwick Consistometer is the standard instrument for measuring the consistency and flow rate of semi-solid foods, sauces, and pharmaceutical products. The sample is held behind a spring-loaded gate; releasing the gate lets the fluid flow down a precision-engraved trough at 0.5 cm intervals — distance traveled in a fixed time gives the Bostwick value.

How to use
Pour 75 ml of sample into the reservoir behind the gate.
Release the gate using the spring-loaded lever — the gate opens instantaneously.
Time the flow as the sample travels down the graduated trough.
Read the distance reached at the chosen time interval (typically 30 seconds) — this is the Bostwick value in centimeters.
