Clinical applications

  • Corneal abrasion & ulcer detection — highlights epithelial defects under cobalt blue light
  • Dry eye assessment — evaluates tear film break-up time (TBUT)
  • Applanation tonometry — facilitates accurate Goldmann IOP measurement
  • Contact lens fitting — assesses lens-to-cornea fluorescein pattern (RGP and scleral)
  • Foreign body detection — reveals corneal surface irregularities
  • Seidel test — detects aqueous humor leak after trauma or surgery
  • Lacrimal patency testing — Jones I dye disappearance test

How to use

Instill a drop of sterile saline on the orange strip tip. Touch the moistened strip to the lower palpebral conjunctiva or fornix to stain the tear film. Wait 10–15 seconds for the dye to spread, then examine under cobalt blue light or with a slit lamp blue filter. Each strip is single-use and should be discarded after one application. Avoid contact with soft contact lenses, which absorb fluorescein and may stain.

Frequently asked questions

What's the difference between 1mg and 2mg fluorescein strips?

1mg strips are the clinical standard for routine ocular surface diagnostics — corneal abrasion detection, applanation tonometry, and TBUT testing. 2mg strips deliver a higher dye load, sometimes preferred for fundus angiography photography or where deeper staining is needed. For 95% of clinic use cases (slit lamp exam, contact lens fitting, dry eye assessment), 1mg is sufficient and reduces residual orange-yellow staining of the eyelids and lashes.

Are SciMed fluorescein strips USP-grade and made in the USA?

Yes to both. SciMed fluorescein sodium ophthalmic strips contain pharmaceutical-grade fluorescein sodium meeting United States Pharmacopeia (USP) specifications for ophthalmic use, and they are manufactured in our California facility. Every box is lot-numbered and dated for full traceability.

Can I use these strips for applanation tonometry?

Yes. 1mg fluorescein strips are the standard dye source for Goldmann applanation tonometry. Wet the strip with one drop of proxymetacaine, oxybuprocaine, or another anesthetic drop, touch to the lower fornix, and proceed with measurement under the cobalt blue filter.

How long is the shelf life?

Sealed sterile strips have a shelf life of 36 months from manufacture when stored in original packaging at room temperature, protected from direct sunlight. Each box is marked with lot number and expiry.

How should fluorescein strips be stored?

Store in a cool, dry place (15–25°C / 59–77°F), away from direct sunlight. Once a strip is removed from its individual foil pouch, use immediately and discard. Do not refrigerate or freeze. Do not store opened strips for later use — contamination risk.

Are these strips sterile?

Yes. Each fluorescein strip is individually wrapped in a sterile foil pouch and intended for single-use only. Re-use of strips between patients risks cross-infection and is not recommended.

Can patients with soft contact lenses use fluorescein?

Fluorescein sodium can be absorbed into soft hydrogel and silicone hydrogel contact lenses and cause persistent staining of the lens. Always remove soft contact lenses before fluorescein application and wait at least 1 hour before reinsertion. RGP (rigid gas permeable) lenses are not affected and can be assessed with fluorescein in place.

What's the difference between fluorescein and lissamine green?

Fluorescein stains epithelial defects (it pools in areas where the epithelium is missing or compromised). Lissamine green stains devitalized cells (dead or dying epithelial cells that are still in place). They are complementary stains — fluorescein for corneal abrasions, ulcers, and TBUT; lissamine green for ocular surface disease grading and Sjogren's workup.

Can I bulk-order for my practice or hospital?

Yes. We offer volume pricing at 5, 10, 25, and 50-box tiers for ophthalmology practices, optometry groups, urgent care chains, ED departments, and hospital purchasing. Reply to clinic@scimedstore.com with your monthly volume estimate for a quote.

Do you ship internationally?

Yes. SciMed ships fluorescein strips to most international destinations. International orders ship via tracked USPS or DHL with customs documentation. Contact us for DDP (Delivered Duty Paid) quotes for Gulf/MENA, EU, and APAC clinic procurement.
