What a muffle furnace does
A muffle furnace heats samples in a sealed refractory chamber (the "muffle") that isolates them from combustion byproducts — critical for accurate ash content, loss on ignition (LOI), gravimetric analysis, and material property testing where contamination would skew results. Kanthal wire heating elements deliver clean, controllable heat up to 1,200°C through a grooved refractory brick liner that surrounds the sample chamber on 4 sides for uniform temperature distribution. The PID digital controller holds setpoint ±3-5°C once equilibrated; the pyrometer thermocouple provides continuous temperature verification.

Frequently asked questions
What sample size can I fit inside the 225×100×100mm chamber?
Typical loads: 4-8 standard 30 mL porcelain crucibles for ashing, or a single ~200 mL ceramic dish for larger loads. For gold + silver assay: 2-3 cupels per firing. Volume ~2.25L is ideal for small-batch analytical work; if you need to run 15+ crucibles per batch or large ceramic pieces, contact us for the larger 300×150×150 or 400×200×200 chamber variants.
Is this hot enough for gold + silver fire assay?
Yes. Fire assay cupellation runs at 950-1000°C, well within the 1200°C max rating and comfortable working range. Kanthal elements handle this daily. Assay houses typically use K-type thermocouples for standard work; upgrade to S-type ($300) if you require ±1-2°C precision instead of standard ±3-5°C.
Can I run 1200°C continuously?
Not recommended. 1200°C is the max rating — running there continuously halves Kanthal element life. Recommended continuous working temperature is 1100°C. If you need 1200°C+ regularly, consider our high-temp variant with silicon carbide (SiC) elements rated to 1400°C — email for quote.
What thermocouple type does this use?
Standard K-type (Chromel-Alumel) — accurate ±3-5°C across the 0-1200°C range, suitable for ashing, LOI, general lab work. S-type (Pt/Pt-10%Rh) upgrade available for ±1-2°C precision — required for pharma USP <281> residue on ignition and some ceramic industry applications.
What's the heat-up time to 1000°C?
Typically 45-60 minutes from ambient to 1000°C. Higher setpoints require proportionally longer (75-90 minutes to 1200°C). The PID controller manages ramp rate automatically; for critical ash-content methods, allow full thermal equilibration (additional 15-20 minutes at setpoint) before starting timed hold.
Do I need special ventilation?
Yes — fume hood or dedicated ventilated cabinet is required. Ashing organic samples produces smoke + combustion gases (CO, CO₂, SO₂ from sulfur-containing samples). Never operate in a closed room without ventilation. This is a universal requirement for muffle furnaces, not specific to SciMed.
What voltage?
Specify 110V (standard US 15A circuit) or 220V (international / high-power) at order. 220V is preferred for 1200°C operation as heat-up is slightly faster; 110V is fine for continuous 1000°C or below work. Dedicated circuit strongly recommended — don't share with other high-draw equipment.
What's the warranty?
1-year parts + labor on outer body, refractory, controller, thermocouple, silver fuse. Kanthal elements: 6-month at max 1200°C use (elements are consumable at max rating) or 2-year warranty when operated at 1000-1100°C working temperature. Replacement Kanthal wire kits stocked in San Jose ($120-180 per set) with 5+ year availability post-purchase.
Is this ISO 17025 compatible for accredited labs?
Yes for the equipment side — CE + ISO 9001 manufacturing certifications standard. For ISO 17025 lab accreditation, your calibration provider will perform annual temperature calibration + uncertainty assessment on the installed furnace. Factory calibration records (traceable to NIST or NPL equivalents) included on request.
