What this refractometer is for

  • Home brewing + winemaking — measure original gravity of wort or must; track fermentation progress
  • Fruit + honey producers — check ripeness, jam setting point, honey moisture-adjacent sugar content
  • Maple syrup — hit the 66 °Brix mark for USDA Grade A
  • Agriculture + gardening — measure crop sugar levels as a proxy for ripeness and nutrient density
  • Education — food-science labs, biology and chemistry teaching demos

How to use

  • Open the daylight plate. Place 2-3 drops of your sample on the prism using the included pipette.
  • Close the plate and hold the refractometer up to a light source (window or lamp).
  • Look through the eyepiece — read the Brix percentage where the blue/white boundary line crosses the scale.
  • Wipe the prism clean between samples. Recalibrate with distilled water occasionally.

Frequently asked questions

Does it work with alcoholic drinks (beer, wine)?

Yes for wort and must (pre-fermentation). Post-fermentation the alcohol interferes with the reading — use a correction chart or a hydrometer for final gravity if you need alcohol content.

Do I need to calibrate before every use?

A daily zero-point check with distilled water is best practice. Adjust with the included screwdriver if the zero line drifts.

What if I need a higher Brix range for maple syrup finishing?

This unit tops out at 32 %. For finishing maple syrup at 66 °Brix you'll need a higher-range refractometer (0-90 or 58-92 Brix scale). Contact us and we'll help you pick the right one.

Does it need batteries?

No. It's a fully optical instrument — hold it up to any bright light source.

Is the case included?

Yes. The refractometer, cleaning cloth, calibration screwdriver, pipettes, and instructions all fit in the included plastic case.
