Universal fully-adjustable optical trial frame — the primary refraction-lane instrument for every optometry practice, ophthalmology clinic, and low-vision service. Adjustable PD 48-80mm (accommodates children through adults with wide IPD), temple length 98-135mm, nose bridge height 0-14mm, adjustable nose angle 0-30° for individual facial anatomy. Full 360° lens rotation with independent axis calibration on each cell (left −120° to 0° to 135°, right +45° to 180° to 60°) for precise cylinder axis positioning. Ultralight 74g total weight — critical for patient comfort during 15-20 min refractions. $249.99 direct — versus $500-$900 for Oculus UB4 / Topcon TT-01 / Reichert 12871 / Marco M-25 branded universal trial frames.
Applications
- Primary refraction lane — subjective refraction in every optometry / ophthalmology practice (this IS the primary frame)
- Pediatric refraction — narrow PD adjustment (min 48mm) fits school-age children
- Low vision refraction — accommodates decentered lens positioning + trial magnifiers
- Post-cataract refraction — adjustable frame accommodates surgical hardware + patient anatomy variations
- Contact lens over-refraction — refract over patient's contacts to fine-tune Rx
- Prism refraction (strabismus, diplopia) — hold prism trial lenses in cell for alignment testing
- Community + rural eye clinics — primary refraction tool
- Screening camps — one universal frame + several fixed-PD backup frames (SciMed 64mm $249)

FAQ
Universal vs fixed-PD frame — which do I need?
Both. Universal (this frame) = primary refraction-lane tool, adjustable to any patient anatomy from child to adult. Fixed-PD (SciMed 64mm, $249) = backup / spare / camp frame, faster to seat on adult patients when high throughput matters. A well-equipped practice has both.
Why the specific axis calibration ranges?
Axis scales are marked from the perspective of each eye (patient's convention, not TABO). Left cell (patient's left = provider's right): reads −120° through 0° (horizontal) to +135°. Right cell mirrors this. Standard optometry convention — no re-training needed for staff familiar with any commercial trial frame.
Trial lens set compatibility?
Universal 38mm cell — accepts any standard optometry trial lens set (SciMed sets, Marco, Reichert, Topcon, Oculus, generic 232-piece or 266-piece sets). No proprietary lock-in.
Compared to premium Oculus / Topcon — what's the trade-off?
Oculus / Topcon are precision German/Japanese optical instruments with tighter machining tolerances, longer service life, and industry-leading axis calibration precision. This SciMed frame delivers functional refraction-lane accuracy at 30-40% of premium OEM pricing. For a high-volume specialty practice, invest in Oculus. For general optometry, residencies, community clinics, NGO programs, and satellite offices, SciMed hits the value sweet spot.
